First of all, I just got back from the Americasmart Gift and Home Furnishings Show in Atlanta. This is where stores and boutiques go to purchase their merchandise wholesale. It's HUGE, overwhelming...and so...so amazing all at the same time. It was very exciting, because my licensed products were at market for the first time! This is my first painting of 2012! It didn't start out with the intention of painting a found kitty...but I guess I was still upset with Mr. Tokyo for disappearing for an all night romp.

He was fine, and but I was a mess. I didn't know whether to be mad or happy when he appeared the next morning like nothing had happened.

I guess all the emotions of the experience came together in the painting.

I went back to beeswax on this one, to celebrate the launch of the Wyanne Collection by (will tell you soon) at the Atlanta Gift and Home Furnishing Show this weekend. Speaking of which...I need to get on the road to Atlanta. More from the show!

This was the last painting of 2011. I think it's starting to hit me that I'm really moving back to the big city of Atlanta, and leaving the island. While I'm very excited to have my family all in one place, and the incredible urban opportunities...I am really going to miss walking a short block to see the ocean.

Even though I'm not leaving until June, I started packing this week. My lease was up at Blue Door and I decided not to renew it. My gallery space was immediately snatched up by another artist, and I moved everything out. I can honestly say, that I've questioned that decision a lot. I'm really going to miss that place. But, when I think of the loads of things that have to be handled before the move...I know it was for the best. It still makes me very sad.

On a happy note...the year ended with an article published in Cloth Paper Scissors November/December issue!

And the cover of Sasee Magazine. It is a women's magazine based out of South Carolina.

And 2012 is looking great....with the debut of my licensed products next week at the Atlanta Gift and Home Furnishings Mart. I'll let you know more about that next week when I head up to Atlanta for the show. Meanwhile...here's a sneak peak of some samples of the products they sent me. Shhhh...don't tell....

There comes a time in everyone's life when you wake up and realize that things aren't quite right for you. It's time to make some changes. It's time to say no more often...and time to say YES to the things you normally said no to.

Put the oxygen mask on yourself first...before you can be any good to anyone else.

I have officially arrived at this point in my life.

2012 is my year to make major changes, starting now.

1. I will paint.....a LOT.
2. I will paint for myself.
3. I'm going to concentrate on a large body of work for galleries.
4. I'm going to become a master of the art supplies that I LOVE, and let go of all the rest.

And one of the biggest changes...I've decided to move back to Atlanta in June.

I'm slowly letting go of things, and making changes that point me in the direction that I want and need to go. It's not easy, but...

I finally feel like I can breathe again.....

I hope your holidays are magical and your 2012 is incredible!

I've started a new routine. Some people read or watch TV in bed before they fall asleep...I've decided to paint. I guess it's a good thing that Danny is working in Atlanta most of the time, because I've taken over both night stands with my supplies. I found that it's the best thing to calm my mind. I don't have a plan, a drawing or any preconceived idea. I merely let the paint dance around the paper as I unwind from the day. Sometimes I paint for only 5 minutes before I can't keep my eyes open any longer. I continue this nightly routine until I start to get an idea of where the painting is going...then I finish it off in the studio. "Dandy Lion" is my first creation from this new routine. A friend on Facebook said that it reminded her of the 60's. I love that. I was born in the 60's and was always quite enamored by the psychedelic designs of that era. I can remember studying the artwork on my doll case more than playing with the actual doll.

It's funny how something that long ago, still makes it into my artwork today.

I'm off to bed and more painting. More later.

Where did the summer go? Actually, where did the last 17 years go? This past weekend I toured a University campus with my son. I can't believe he'll be off to college in a year! Where did all that time go?

Of course, this all reminded me that life is too short. And it also reminded me that I need to get off my fanny and create a lot more! I haven't even begun to touch the surface with everything that I want to do!

While we were on the tour, a professor of art & design at the University said that "inspiration never comes in the studio". I don't agree with that. Perhaps it's because he is a professor of computer animation and game art...and his studio is a computer. My studio is where I have the most inspiration...as long as I'm playing and having fun. But, how much time do we waste just sitting around waiting for inspiration to happen before we ever dig out our paints or supplies? We should play, have fun and stop thinking that every creation has to be a masterpiece! Just get busy!!!!

I've also decided to spend more time creating jewelry again. It's my other passion. I just finished this gorgeous turquoise necklace.

Yesterday, I finally got some time in my studio. It's been a crazy few months. I'm not complaining at all. But, I've only been able to dash in and dash out, of my studio lately. I was a little shocked when I opened the door to this:

Now that Danny is in Atlanta full-time, I've had to split my time up between the island and the big city. It's been an adjustment, but I'm getting accustomed to it. I'm convinced that the contrast between the two places is good for my psychi. Here's a shot of my Atlanta studio...see the difference?

This painting was started in Atlanta and finished on the island. It's watery acrylic and collage. Here's the video of it. It features Hector the french bulldog, who lives in Atlanta.

Off to clean the island studio now. Where are those magical cleaning elves when you need them?

Garden Wild of dreams coming true....

This is my latest paintings called "Garden Wild". It was a birthday present for one of my very best friends. When I painted it, I had no preconceived ideas about what I was going to paint for him. I just picked colors that I thought he would like and let it develop on it's own. Instead of focusing on the end result, I just allowed the paint, the love, and the energy to do their magic on the canvas. I enjoyed the process and didn't worry about how the finished painting would look. It's a concept that I try to teach my student's in the Paint Free class, and magically...I have found the concept to work in my life, as well.

You see...these past few months have been a whirlwind of great positive things happening in my life. I am so filled with gratitude and emotion right now, that I can barely write this post due to the tears streaming down my face. Not only have I been blessed with the licensing agreement for my art, but there a several other artistic happenings that I'll be telling you about soon. It's amazing. And you know what...it all started the same way as the painting.

I knew what the end result should feel like, and I was able to visualize just a little as to what it should look like, but other than that...I just planted the seeds, and loved the pure process of helping them grow. And like magic, the seeds sprouted, took root, grew and now are starting to bloom.

It's been almost 3 years since I started putting together the Paint Free class. It started as a collection of scribbled notes and affirmations that I had made over the past decade my own artistic journey. I wanted to share what I had learned along the way. Not the business or technical side, but the emotional side of being an artist, and especially a painter. I wasn't sure how it would be received, but I nurtured and loved it every step of the way. A magical garden bloomed filled with incredible diverse artists. I am so proud of every one of them. Ten years of passionate scribbled notes and emotions to a dream come true.

I am in awe of the magic of art, love and the Universe.

Thank you all for your love and support over the years. I cannot even begin to tell you how much it means to me.

The past few weeks have been a whirlwind. Whoever came up with the term, "When it rains, it pours"...definitely hit the nail on the head. Don't get me wrong...things have not been bad at all. In fact, it's been incredibly fantastic! So many great things are happening...my head is spinning! I just had a great show at the gallery, have been asked to teach some in person workshops, and more....

About three months ago, my daughter and I were shopping in a gorgeous boutique downtown. She was trying to find a very special birthday present for her best friend. As we were looking around, she saw a scarf with a cute little owl on it. She said, "Mommy, that looks like your art". I looked at the retro owl and thought it did a tiny bit, but not a whole lot. But, the scarf was part of a collection by a company that had the cutest, bohemian girly products that I had ever seen. They were adorable. Logan and I loved everything. I made a mental note of the name of the company and thought to myself...if I ever want to license my artwork..."maybe" I should contact this company. ( I had turned down previous license agreements because I didn't like the products.) We purchased a couple of pieces of jewelry from the company's collection and left. Later on, as we were wrapping the pieces for her friend, I admired the quality and originality of the jewelry...but totally FORGOT about the company who made them.

About a month and a half later, I received an email that said:

Hello there!

We were in your gallery in Fernandina Beach yesterday and think

your work is amazing!  We would love to talk with you about the

possibility of working together.

Please give us a call at your convenience.

Thanks so much and we look forward to talking with you!

It was signed by the creative directors of the same company that I had seen displayed in the little boutique. I thought it was a joke. I live on a tiny island! In fact, I didn't call them...I emailed them instead. After several emails back and forth, I realized that it was in fact, real. They wanted to meet with me. I was still unsure about it all. I didn't know how large their company was, or how long they had been in business. I wasn't sure I wanted my artwork on products, especially if my name was no longer associated with the artwork. But, I agreed to the meeting.

Fast forward, over a month later....with a lot of attorney conversations and decisions....

I signed a 2 year contract with them. It will be "The Wyanne Collection for __________".

Isn't that terrible...after all this...I can't tell you the name of the company. I can tell you that they are a large wholesale company that sells globally....mostly to exclusive boutiques...but some of their biggest clients are Hallmark and Francesca's Collections. The products will not be out to the wholesale market until January 2012, and at the retail market a few months later.

So, just like my new painting "Dream State" above...things just feel like a dream. You might remember when I started this painting a while back...

It has had quite a transformation....just like me.

The Universe knows when the timing is right. All you have to do is put it out there....and keep taking baby steps.

the magic maker

The Magic Maker

"The Magic Maker" is my latest painting. It is watery acrylic, gouache, sumi ink, and collage on watercolor paper. This is another one that I used the designs from the initial paint on the paper to inspire the entire painting. You would think that this would remove my emotions from the painting....but I've found that it doesn't. In fact, it tends to amplify my emotions and truly reflect them into the work in a way that I would not have been able to do from a pre-planned drawing.

During the time that I was painting this one, I was also working closely with someone that I like to refer to as the "fairy godmother". This "fairy godmother" has generously sponsored well deserving students to take my classes for free, like a scholarship program. I've never met the fairy godmother in person, or even talked with her on the phone. We have simply become friends through my artwork and classes over the years. Through her generosity, two students were able to participate in my Tough Love Creative workshop, that might not have been able to participate on their own.

I can't tell you how thrilling it is was to watch the student's develop and then pick them for the scholarships. It's not as big as a college scholarship or winning the lottery...but you would never know from their excitement.

As I shared with the "fairy godmother" my picks for the scholarships and their excitement...she referred to me as the "The Magic Maker". I thought to myself...no...the "fairy godmother" is really "The Magic Maker" and doesn't even know it. She sits quietly behind the scenes and makes all the magic happen. And this is how and why, my new painting came to be....

This is my latest painting called "Wonderment". It is a mixed media piece with acrylic, ink, collage on watercolor paper mounted to wood. I'm really enjoying the new style that is evolving in my work. I guess it's a little wilder and untamed these days. I don't know where it's going...and I kinda like it that way. The pure excitement of watching it unfold is beyond thrilling, making me rush to the studio every chance I get. The process of feeling the paint flow across the paper, swirl, and change is indescribable. Artists ask me everyday...how do I find my style. Let me just tell you...

your style is created when you feel this kind of energy and excitement in your work.

It's not about how you paint...it's about how you FEEL when you paint.

It saddens me to no end, when an artist copies the work of another artist. You will never find your own style this way! You can learn techniques from another artist, but copying that artist is hindering your growth. You will never have or enjoy the same energy creating the piece as the original artist did! So therefore your piece won't be as good. Why do so many artists feel that they have to copy another artist to be considered "good"?

As artists, we are natural sponges. We absorb all the beauty of the world, and it comes out in one way or another in our work. That's natural. But, you cannot take another artist's painting, change the colors and add a few extra details and call it yours. It wasn't your inspiration. And no matter how much fun you had creating it...the painting will never truly be yours. You know in your heart that it's not yours. You've just created bad karma. And if you turn around and try to profit from work that's not entirely yours...you've just created triple bad karma.

Your energy, your imagination and your love are the only things that can make your art good!

Find your inspiration deep down inside of you. It's there...I promise. It's really good if it doesn't look like anyone else's inspiration! There will always be someone somewhere who appreciates your inspiration. Your inspiration is good enough. You are perfect...just the way we are.

This is my latest little painting. Funny...I just uploaded the video on YouTube, and the first comment wanted to know if it was a commission because it was so cute. But, it wasn't a commission...in fact when I started the piece I had no idea or preconceived notion about what it would become. I have to work shifts at my gallery 6 times a month. The shifts are short, only 3 hours long. I moved all my painting supplies to my home studio, and all my jewelry making supplies to Blue Door. My goal was to work on jewelry for my 3 hour shifts. But, lately...I've been so obsessed with painting, that I still pack up the painting supplies and take them to work at Blue Door. Silly, I know...

One day...late for work...I grabbed this gorgeous wood panel, and a few other supplies and darted out the door for the gallery. Once I got settled at the gallery, I knew that I didn't want to lose part of the gorgeous wood grain of the panel, so I randomly put down sections of rice paper onto the wood. Then I mixed up some watery paint and just played for a few minutes...just unconsciously painting on the paper with no idea or care about what it would become. When I was finished....I looked at the crazy brushstrokes and immediately saw a baby elephant...and I just started making up the rest from my imagination. The thing is...the little baby elephant was really not in the ideal place for a painting...but I chose to ignore that fact...and in the spirit of Tim Gunn...."make it work".

You see..I'm a big believer in no mistakes in my art. It took me a long time to get to that point. Everything for me is a happy mistake or destiny. I know that probably sounds outlandish for many...but that's just how I roll. Yes, even if I spilled an entire bottle of black ink on my canvas...I would still consider it to be destiny. I would work really hard (but without stress) and find the gift that had been given to me by that ink spill. It's there...I promise...you just have to be open to receiving it.

Is it harder to paint this way? No...not really. Sometimes it doesn't move along as fast as a painting I planned out to the Nth degree. It takes a little longer...kinda like a puzzle instead of a road map. But, the best part is it always turns out better than anything I could have imagined in my mind.

I love that. It makes painting exciting. I go to bed thinking about the painting...and can't wait to start on it first thing in the morning. Just like....a box of chocolates....you never know what you're gonna get...but one thing you know for sure.... is it will always be chocolate.

I never know what I'm going to get when I create...but that's okay...cause I'm just painting because it's fun...how wonderful is that????

I'm often asked by other artists, "How do I find my own style"? For a long time, I used to tell them that it just happens with lots of practice. And I do, indeed...still think that's true. But, now I'm realizing that there is a lot more to it...

In early March, I'll turn another year older. And I can honestly say that this is one birthday that I'm not dreading. In fact, I'm actually looking forward to it. I've tried to figure out what has caused me to have this unexpected feeling of acceptance and ease. It's a little difficult to pinpoint, and I don't think that it is any one thing. I guess the biggest change that I've undergone is just accepting myself, flaws and all. Realizing I am perfect in my own ways...and not like everyone else. I started paying attention to the things I liked, and that made me comfortable. I got rid of the things that didn't feel right. It's been a slow evolution, but worth the journey. I had a friend that used to say to me, "You're so Wyanne". At first, I hated that...I felt it was a put down in some way...like I was weird or different.

Then recently, out of the blue, a student said the same thing to me...and I just had to chuckle.

I thought to myself.....Yes, I am...I worked very hard to arrive at "Wyanne".

Finding your own style in your artwork is the same type of process. First (of course), you have to do the work and practice. And as you get a little more confident in your skills....you need to become "aware". What feels right in your hand? Do you really like canvas as a surface to paint on? How do you like to apply the paint, heavy with texture or watery and free? As you become more aware of the things that you really like, start concentrating on them. Then start eliminating everything that doesn't feel right. Just because you heard that works on canvas sell faster than works on paper, doesn't mean you should stay with canvas, if it doesn't feel right!

I can promise you that you will never find your own style if you continue to listen to everyone else except yourself!

After you have a really good idea of what you like...then you start pushing yourself creatively.

Just because you have finally discovered your comfort zone artistically, doesn't mean you stop! If you stop pushing yourself...you'll soon find your artwork becoming stale, boring and predictable!

Learn that the greatest mistakes, often are the greatest teachers. Allow yourself to make mistakes. Bend the rules, and break the rules! Have fun...life is too short!

If you are not having fun with your art, what's the point of doing it!

And you know what...while you are doing this...the craziest thing will happen.....You will be thinking to yourself...I'll never find my own style. My work is all over the map.

And at the same time, everyone else will be "loving your style".

You won't even know it! Until someone reminds you and says...."You're so insert your name here!"

Post Wolf ...stepping out of the comfort zone

This is my latest painting. I know it's probably a little shocking for some of you. I stepped WAY out of my comfort zone to do this painting. And boy...am I glad I did. What a way to start the New Year! I had no idea what this painting would be when I started. There were no preconceived ideas, colors or compositions. I simply randomly placed some paint on the watercolor paper and let it develop from there.

It was a slow process, taking me about 2 weeks to complete a 12"x12" painting. I didn't spend 8 hours a day on it. I just tried to do a little bit every day...and then live with it until the next morning. Sometimes I only worked on it for 10 minutes a day...and then stopped when the painting left me feeling uncomfortable. The discomfort did not come from the subject matter, but more from allowing unexpected things to happen in the painting that might have normally been treated another way. I forced myself to accept this discomfort as a sign that I was on the right path. I embraced it. It was a little scary...but so worth it in the end.

Too often we feel that we have to paint something a certain way, or a way that we've seen before. If we don't paint it that way, then it "must" be wrong. But, what happens when we allow ourselves to accept the discomfort as guidance that we are on the right path? Magic can happen...that's what.

Everyday, as soon as a part of it became uncomfortable, or didn't look right...I stopped. I waited until the next day to look at it objectively. Nine times out of ten, I accepted what made me uncomfortable as good, and found solutions to make it work in the painting. The result was something that I had always vaguely envisioned in my head, but could never make a reality. Until now. Except that it's better than anything I could have envisioned. I also used the layered resin technique on the painting. I don't know if you can see it very well in this side photo.

With this technique, I paint between layers of resin. It makes the colors appear to float, and creates natural shadows in the resin.

The entire process was exhilarating. I went to bed thinking about this painting, and woke up thinking about this painting. It made me fall in love with painting again. I have had several students tell me that the Paint Free class made them fall in love with painting again. I was very touched by that...but now I really get what they are talking about! You become obcessed...and can't stop thinking about it! I've already started the next painting..and I might even like it better than this one....

It's a wonderful feeling.

Wow....I can't believe it's Christmas Eve! Where has this year gone to? I just finished this new painting, "Solitude" and a new video and wanted to get it up for you. It would be cool to say that it's the last painting of 2010 but I'm really hoping to sneak in some painting time in the next few days.

This has been a year of learning for me. It seems in all areas of my life, I've learned. It's quite fascinating when I think about it. I've learned how to be a better partner, a better provider for my family, a better friend, a better teacher and a better artist. I could probably go on with a hundred other things....but instead, I'd like to focus on just one...a better artist.

I spent the first part of the year, learning resin on my own. I couldn't find anything out there on the subject. So, I had to teach myself. Boy, was it filled with lots of trials and tribulations. It was so complex, but the results were stunning. Definitely, a highlight of my year. But, I think the biggest highlight of the year was the chance to study with one of my favorite artists, Nicholas Simmons. Through the generosity of another artist who could not attend the workshop at the last minute, the workshop organizer, and one of my fellow Blue Door artists....I was able to go to the workshop gratis.

It was amazing. I highly recommend Nichola's workshops if you are interested in working with fluid acrylics on paper. In this painting, I took what I learned from the workshop, changed it up and came up with my own version.

I am really thankful to everyone who made that workshop happen for me.

I've decided to pay it forward.

Perplexed and pre-planning....

"Perplexed" is my newest painting. Does it look familiar? It was started over a year ago, and just now finished. And no....it didn't take me a year to paint it! LOL

In art school, we are taught to start a painting with a separate sketch, and then work out all the colors before proceding onto the canvas. Sometime last year or so...I thought I should give that process another go. So I did a sketch, and took the time to paint a small version of it. Here's a photo of that painting. "No Bees Yet, Just Butterflies".

Bet you recognize it now. I really planned it out, and created such a detailed drawing that I ended up selling it. I then took the preliminary drawing and scanned it, and tranfered it to the wood board. I started painting it...and lost all interest. It traveled with me as I moved my studio twice. And I don't think there has been a day that I didn't look at it and think that I should finish it.

Well, that day finally came. I decided to start working on it again. But, after I started, I quickly realized that I am just not a pre-planning kind of gal. It's too restrictive. I felt confined. It was boring. Almost like a paint by numbers kind of painting. I didn't want to paint entirely over it, because I really felt that I needed to honor the painting that I had spent such a great deal of time planning. But, I had to switch it up a bit.

Play and have fun! That's the name of the game. And "Perplexed" was the outcome.

Here's a video of the process. I can't believe I still had the footage from over a year ago. Maybe I am somewhat organized...or just extremely lucky. :)

The new "Paint Free" class opens Jan. 3rd, and class begins Jan. 5th. I am very excited. This will be the third offering of the class...so hard to believe. When I first started these two paintings, the "Paint Free" class was merely on paper too. It took almost two years of pre-planning. Back then, I wasn't sure how artists would react to it. Would it help them? But, the response has been incredible. It is so rewarding for me also. To see these artists open up and blossom makes my heart burst with pride. I am so proud of all of them. And I'm proud of me for pre-planning something and actually having it work out pretty well. LOL

This is a fun little painting that I did the other day. I needed a break from a larger painting that I was working on that was being a tad difficult. Actually it wasn't so much that it was misbehaving...as much as it was that my mind needed a break from the complexities it held. So...these little elephants were a nice diversion.

When I finished, I looked at the two paintings side by side....and they didn't look like they were done by the same person almost. One was fun and light...and the other much more serious. I had to laugh because I teach the Paint Free class to help students find their own unique style.

But, I think that it's a good thing to change it up once in a while. We don't wear the same clothes every day...or even the same style of clothes every day. At least...I don't. It's not unusual to find me in funky overalls and crocs one day, and the next day, heels and a silk blouse. The common denominators are that I wear both outfits and both probably have paint stains.

So many of my students are looking for their own unique style of painting. But, I don't think that style comes from the subject matter that we paint...as much as the way we paint. It has to do with our brushstrokes and the energy that we give to the painting. That's what becomes recognizable and creates style. Just like your clothes don't make who you are...the subject matter in your paintings doesn't make your style. Geez...imagine if you had to paint the same subject day after day. How boring would that be?

So, paint what makes you happy in the moment!

Thursday, I am headed to Miami. I'm very excited. It's my annual trip to Art Basel, said to be the most important art show in the US. I just know it's huge and SO MUCH FUN!!! I usually travel by myself. This year, my 16 year old son is going with me. He is an incredible artist himself. So, I'm really looking forward to seeing some great art and having some quality time with him.

In other news, the new Paint Free class begins Jan. 3rd. There are a few spaces open. The new Tough Love workshop series will begin a few days later. These are coaching workshops for students who have completed Paint Free and want to take their art further creatively or commercially.

Back in late August, I discovered that one of my all time favorite artists, Nicholas Simmons was teaching a workshop here on the island. I really wanted to go, but I just couldn't swing it. I had already promised my 16 year old that I would take him to see Art Basel in Miami this year. So, for two months I wished and dreamed that there was a way that I could do both. Finally in October, I got the nerve up to ask the workshop director if I could work out a barter with her for the workshop. I volunteered to wash brushes, run errands, anything that I could possibly do to be able to attend. It took her a few days to get back to me with my offer...but the answer was no. The workshop was filled. It was a small room and they couldn't take another person. I was so disappointed.

But, I let it go, and figured it was for the best. I got really busy with my own classes and two shows and tried to forget about it. The evening before the workshop was to begin, I received a call from the director. She said that an opening had come available at the last minute. For a minute I got very excited, and then I remembered that I was saving up to take Luke to the Miami show this year. I told her that I wouldn't be able to take it for financial reasons. And then I heard her say the most amazing news, "It's been gifted to you." Someone wasn't able to go, and gave me their paid spot for free. I was shocked to say the least.

Early the next morning, I was sitting in the workshop.

I knew that I could learn a lot from him. I knew deep in my heart that I was supposed to go to that workshop. I am filled with gratitude that some very generous people gave me the opportunity.

It was incredible and exceeded my expectations. If you ever get the opportunity to study under Nicholas Simmons, I highly recommend it. He is the greatest teacher, and an fantastic person.

Saturday night, he came to my Blue Door studio during our artwalk, and spent a lot of time with me looking at my work and talking.

houses...contrasts, thoughts and accomplishments

To say that life has been a little ~~stressful~~ complicated lately, would be an understatement. But, at the same time things are really great. I have two shows next week. This is one of my new originals for the show...it's a little bit different for me. I'm really happy with the way that it came out. It's using a layering technique that I'm showing my students in the Paint Free class.

I'm really looking forward to having some time off to do some more paintings like this one. Because it was a lot of fun! I would love to loosen up enough to paint my girls like this...wouldn't that be interesting?

With my schedule lately, it's been very easy to get so wrapped up in the ~~stress~~ contrasts of life, that I forget the important things. One of my students wrote this in an email the other day...and it really made me sit back, think and be extremely grateful for my life.

"BTW... I'm so proud of you Wyanne! Take a quick moment to step back and reflect on 10 years ago... where were you...and did you EVER think...in your wildest dreams...you would be surrounded by hundreds if not thousands of fans...producing yummy artwork that gets gobbled up as soon as it's available...teaching hundreds of anxious artists to be confident and at home with their art and themselves? At one point... I feel sure of it... YES! You had the vision... Cause now... It's Here...It's Now...and It's Alive! So proud of You!"

I don't know about the hundreds or thousands part, or the gobbling up...but wow...thinking about the journey these past 10 years is amazing. A little over 10 years ago, I closed down two art galleries in Atlanta to pursue my own artwork. I wanted stay home with my children, establish an Internet art business, and be able to support my family. Wow, I did it. Almost 5 years ago, I had visions of coaching artists with their creativity, moving to this beautiful island, and creating art. I walked up the funky stairs at Blue Door gallery and thought, "I'd really like to be a part of this one day".

I also remember thinking at the time, that "I might not be good enough" to be a part of Blue Door. Maybe if I hadn't of thought the negative thought, I would had arrived there 2 years earlier. But, that is hindsight.

My point is...don't get so wrapped up in the day to day, that you forget what you have already accomplished. We tend to focus on how hard things are right now, that we forget all the great things in our life. And every negative thought is just a roadblock in our journey!

Think about where you were five, ten years ago...and look at where you are now. I bet you've accomplished a lot more than you give yourself credit for. Be grateful for all those accomplishments! Revel in them! And start setting new intentions for the future.

I am.

Now that my kids are older, I'm ready to start traveling and teaching. I get a little nervous thinking about it...because I wonder if I can be away from them for even a week. But, I'd love to teach the Paint Free workshop in person. Wow...how fabulous that would be. Okay, Universe...I put it out there....

I wanted to share this painting with you. It is part of my "Paint Free" class, and I LOVE IT. I can't even begin to tell you what an impact this class has had on me. The class took almost two years for me to put together, and I wasn't sure I would offer it. I was a little uncertain how other artists would respond to it. But, I'm really glad I did. The response has been out of this world, and the class just radiates love and light. All the sacrifices and sleepless nights were more than worth it. I am filled with gratitude, it is certainly a dream come true.

I'm still crazy busy with my show next month at Blu, and Blue Door...and not to mention all the classes. I just wanted to let you guys know that I'm still around, and will try to be a better blogger when things calm down. But, in the meantime...here's a new video for you.

Wyanne respects the need for us to go through this together and offer support to one another without feeling overwhelmed by the class size or amount of content being shared.

This has by far been my favorite and most worthwhile art class I have taken on so many levels. "Letting Go" is my newest piece. It is acrylic on watercolor paper. I mounted the watercolor paper to a cradled wood canvas, and then applied a resin finish. I originally had intended the piece to be a very purple, dark and Gothic. But, I allowed myself to play and have fun with the colors and I'm very pleased with how it came out. I like it much more than the painting I had envisioned in my head before I started. It is much more complex and interesting. This is a topic that we have been talking a lot about in the Paint Free Class. It's very important to let go of preconceived ideas, and allow the sheer fun of creating to take your work, to new places.

This painting is part of my show next month at Blu in Jacksonville. October is going to be very hectic. Not only do I have the show to prepare for, but also the 1st session of my "Paint Free" class will be coming to a close. The second one starts Oct. 25th. And the long awaited, Mixed Media Resin class starts next week. And yes, there are spaces still available in both classes. So, please bear with me if my posts are a little short and infrequent. It is my crunch time...and rather than complain, stress or procrastinate...I'm just letting go and enjoying the ride. Because, honestly....I thrive on being this busy.

I wanted to take a moment and let everyone know about all the classes that are available, and the differences between all of them.

This class begins Oct. 11th. Registration is now open, click here for details. This is a six week class that focuses on using resin with your paintings and mixed media work. This class has extensive videos and a private class blog that I will be posting to several times a week. The blog posts are related to the videos, to help summarize and compliment the videos. I will be demonstrating start to finish resin techniques for 8 projects. The projects are completely voluntary, and meant to be jumping off points to incorporate into your own artwork. The videos are all downloadable. There is also a private social network to post your work, and get to know others. I will be available to answer all questions, and help trouble shoot problems. This is a fun class to learn how to draw and paint the whimsical big eyed girls. It's an ongoing class that you can join anytime. Through videos, you'll learn how to make a mixed media painting on canvas or paper. The focal point of the painting is your own unique girly or diva that you will learn to draw. We'll be using lots of collage, layering, painting faces and drawing. Through 3 different techniques, I'll show you how to paint mixed media on paper, on canvas and combining the two in a two dimensional paper doll style. I love for my friends to come by the studio and hang out for a play date. We drag out all our supplies and just have fun. There are no rules, no expectations...just lots of fun and learning. Sorry I haven't posted in a while. Getting the final details finished on the "Paint Free" class took up a lot of my time. The class began last week, and I was able to get back to painting. I wanted to do a painting that incorporated all the physical and mental techniques that I had been teaching my students.

I went back to paper, because it was the first surface that I learned to paint on. I gave it up a long time ago, when I realized that most art collectors would prefer not to have to frame a piece. I shouldn't have done that, but at the time it seemed to be the best economic solution for me personally. I also used a combination of acrylics, watercolor and gouache. I didn't use any collage elements in the painting. I wanted it to be created entirely with paint.

I wanted to keep the brushstrokes loose and painterly, without giving up too much detail. I also wanted it to be dark and moody without feeling gloomy. I felt that it should tell a story that might be sweet and cute on the outside, but might have deeper meanings and connotations depending on the viewer.

It was a pretty tall order to put on a little 12" x 12" piece of watercolor paper. But, I decided not to worry about it, and allow things to happen with the piece. When it was done, I was amazed. To some people, I guess it might look like the rest of my work. But, for those of you who know me well...I think you will be able to see the difference. It was the first painting, that I felt that I achieved everything I wanted...technically, emotionally and visually in one piece. It's definitely a turning point for me.

I think a lot of it had to do with my new Paint Free class.

I had been on pins and needles waiting for the class to start...at times wondering if the information was enough. Wondering if I could teach something in 6 weeks that had taken me a decade to figure out for myself and if it would be accepted. I gave it my all, held nothing back, and kept it real. After the first assignment on the second day, I read through comments, emails, and blog posts from the students. It was already making changes in their art and life, and we had not even completed week one. I am excited and filled with tremendous gratitude.

Sharing my knowledge with my students created such intense positive energy and light that it radiated back into my own artwork without me even realizing it at the time. How cool is that?

I took the painting on paper and mounted it onto a 2" deep wood canvas. It created a firm strong foundation for it. I painted the sides of the wood with a burnt orange stain. And then covered the painting in a coat of resin preserving it for years to come.

It all started with a little sheet of watercolor paper...just as it did years ago. Everything comes full circle.

Danny told me the other day that the planets have been out of whack. This is coming from a guy who's not really into astrology that much. But, I'm really beginning to think he is correct. It has been a strange summer for me. I've had great things happening in my career, and crushing things happen in my personal life. Many of you know about my cousin who passed away, but this past week, we lost LaLa, our little yellow bird. There's a part of me that wishes she was just lost, but in actuality she met her unfortunate demise from our new 5 month old kitten, Tokyo. Very sad, tragic, and heartbreaking. We've had some other strange things happen, so if things happen in 3's, as they say...maybe I'm done for a while?

I hope so... it's been an overwhelming past couple of months. It seems like everything is so complicated right now. I asked Danny...remember when we just lived our quiet little lives here on the island? He said, Yeah...how do we get back to that?

Good question. We came up with the answer for us. Simplify. Easier said than done.

I walked in my studio through the obstacle course of supplies the other day...and looked around. Why do I need all this stuff? Sometimes it allows me to take my work to a higher degree technically, but other times...it just get's confusing. You really can have too many art supplies. Yes...I said it. I know some of you are gasping for air over the thought. But, really you can. It can stifle your creativity. How do you simplify your art, when you can't bear the thought of giving up any supplies?

So, on this latest painting. I decided to leave out all the fancy stuff and just go back to what I originally loved when I was first starting to paint. This new painting is watercolor and gouache on Ampersand's Aqua bord. I really enjoyed the freedom. I could paint just because I loved it. I didn't have to worry about technical things. I didn't really start out with any preconceived ideas about what I wanted to paint. I knew the basic color scheme that I wanted to use and I knew she had to have freckles. I originally thought that I might try to change it to a Halloween theme with a skeleton bird, but it seemed a little morbid considering everything that has happened. Not to mention, forced.

I decided to paint and just let it happen organically. As it did...it seemed to be best with an empty cage. I was more than happy to be painting. On the outside I was doing the "painting happy dance". But, the pain of everything that has happened still made it's way into the painting. I don't think you can really control that. And if you do, it looks like you did control it. You know what I mean? I just had to let it be.

I really love how the painting turned out. Totally different that what I had imagined in my head. And definitely totally better than any plans that I originally held for it. No resin, no beeswax, no Souffle pens, no fancy stuff. Just the old tried and true supplies and a whole lot of love.

Simplify...works every time....

"Sometimes Things Don't Feel Right" is my new painting. If you are thinking that it looks a little familiar, then you are right. Remember the painting, "She Is Emerging". This is it, reworked into a new painting.

Do you remember the gallery that was interested in my work, but they wanted to see work that had more of a story and edgier. This was created for them. They saw it, and said that I was on the right track, and they wanted more work. I could never bring myself to do any additional pieces for them. It was very odd, since I REALLY wanted to be associated with this gallery...but something just didn't feel right.

The painting hung at my studio and gallery downtown for a couple of months. One day, I overheard some women talking about the painting. They said, "This painting is severely demented". My feelings were a little hurt, because "demented" is the last adjective I would ever want to describe my work. I took the painting home that afternoon.

Living with the painting gave me a whole new perspective. I could appreciate certain parts of it, and other parts were too negative. It brought me down. It reminded me of a bad time in my life that I was way past. I told my friends and family that I was thinking of painting over it. They gasped and told me that I'd ruin it...or please don't paint over the lion. Everyone had a different opinion.

My astrological sign is Pisces, the fish swimming in two different directions. I am blessed and cursed at the same time with the uncanny ability to see two sides to every situation. I find it extremely difficult to make a decision sometimes, even with the simplest of manners. I could understand what the gallery was looking for, I could understand the criticism from my gallery patrons, and understand every positive and negative comment ever made about the painting. But, what I couldn't understand was my feelings about the painting. I couldn't make a decision about it. This behavior drives my best friend crazy. He is constantly telling me to make a decision, draw the line, and stick to it.

So I decided that something just didn't feel right, and to do something about it. I had no idea where it would take me. I had no preconceived ideas about what it would look like in the finished work. I just knew I wanted it to be happier. So, I jumped off the edge and started painting over it. All I can say is it was really scary for awhile. Terrible negative thoughts kept coming through my head, about how I was ruining it. I shoved them away and focused on the feeling I wanted to create and moved my paint brush along without thinking about it too much. The techniques that I used are some of the same ones as I will be teaching in the new "Paint Free" class next month. All I can say, is when it was done...I knew I had done the right thing.

Yes, it's still melancholy. But, that's okay. I just wanted happier...and it is definitely that. I decided to name it after the feeling that I had all along about the painting. I think it fit it well. As far as the gallery...If being in their gallery means losing myself, or compromising my feelings through my painting...then it's not worth it. I have to draw the line.

I receive numerous emails from artists who are struggling to find their own unique style. They take lots of classes, but cannot seem to break away into something that is uniquely their own. Paint Free is Wyanne's newest online class. It is a 6 week interactive online class. The class will be conducted through a private blog forum and videos. Wyanne will be posting several times a week to the blog and have supporting instructional and inspirational videos each week. Week Four: Dealing with time management. Using doodles to create brilliant, unique paintings. How to become "unstuck" when you are at a loss for ideas. Technical artistic mediums and techniques to take your work to another level.

Week Five: Recycling old work into new work. Keeping collage work fresh and exciting, instead of just objects stuck to a painting. Questioning our need to use additional collage elements in paintings, and how it can serve as a crutch. Additional technical art techniques to take your work to the next level.

Week Six: Bringing it all together. Combining your old style of painting with your new style. How to incorporate new learned techniques into your work without losing your own unique style. Recap, summary and closing inspiration.

Students are encouraged to complete the weekly homework painting assignments and participate in weekly ~~critiques~~ lovetiques.

love shy.....

I was really shy growing up. And it really wasn't until the past few years that I started outgrowing that shyness. I guess some who know me might still think I'm shy, but now I'm more of an observer. I take notice of all going on around me. I enjoy watching people talk, and interact. You can really learn a lot that way. Especially about loving shy and loving big.

Now, I've found that there are two ways to love shy. The first (and what my new painting is about) is when you fall for someone from a distance...and you're a little nervous to get to know them. That's a sweet, innocent love, and what I wanted to capture in the painting. The second type of loving shy...isn't so sweet. It's actually quite wimpy. It's when you are too scared not to be in control of your feelings. So, you hold back. When you go to hug someone...you hold your love back, like not wanting to demonstrate it too much. It's almost like we're scared to lose some part of ourselves. I have been guilty of that for years, mostly from being so shy.

In contrast to that...is someone who loves BIG! My 80 year old Aunt Catherine and my best friend both love BIG. You can tell in their hugs. When I get a hug from either one of them...it's like a huge warm wave just engulfed you. I feel safe, I feel happy and there is no doubt how much they love me. It's exhilarating! They don't think about it when they love big...they just do it. I am really, really trying to be more conscious of loving big.

One thing I've found is that it's very similar to painting.

If you paint shy...it shows in your work. You second guess yourself and hold back. The work generally comes out stiff and boring. Just like when you give those love shy hugs. And it's easy to be forgotten.

Loving Big and Painting Big are almost one and the same. Now, when I say "Paint Big"...I don't mean in terms of size. I mean in the way you "think" when you paint. And the key is to really not think at all...or at least too much. Just do it. Dive into it just like you were going to give someone a great "Love Big" bear hug! There's no right way or wrong way. Just trust yourself and feel the love. Enjoy it. Don't think about it. Don't worry if this color should go here or there...or if this is in proportion to that. Just feel it and feel the love of what you are creating. What magically happens is all that love and energy is engulfed into your painting and creation for everyone to experience. And this I know as fact.

I think this has been the strangest few weeks that I can ever imagine. Losing my cousin, the day after his wedding was a shock to everyone. I know I wasn't prepared. I've lost both of my parents, but it was expected. They were elderly and having health problems. But, when you totally lose someone you are close to, tragically in a split second, unexpectedly...that is really difficult. Last weekend, I went back to Savannah for a small private service to spread his ashes. I had done a pretty good job and holding it together prior to last weekend. Danny said I went into almost a mechanical survival mode. I don't remember. I just know that as soon as I saw that cloud of ashes billow...it hit me hard.

In an instant, my life changed.

It made me realize how much time we waste. How we worry about things too much, and how difficult we make life. How stubborn and narrow minded we all can be.

When you get down to it...there is nothing more important than how much we loved and how much fun we had.

So I've decided to stop wasting time. I'm way too reserved at times. I'm the worst for holding back feelings and emotions, so I can be seen as the "strong", "independent" type. Not telling someone that they hurt my feelings, or just not telling someone how much I love or appreciate them. I decided to start speaking up more, and letting things be known in more direct, but loving, positive way.

I decided to be less fearful (I even got my first tattoo, lol).

I've taken this new found knowledge and applied it to my art, as well. I think you'll start to see an even more playful, free spirit in the work ahead. Did you think I could ever get any more playful, whimsical or magical...well hang on to your seats... This new painting is a direct result of this new thinking. The original concept came from a little funky doodle on my iphone. I'm really, really happy with the way that it came out.

Someone close to my cousin (a guy and not your typical art connoisseur), told me that my art was healing. Watching my videos and viewing my work helped him cope and get through this difficult time. I never had thought of my art in that way before, and I especially never thought of my videos in that way. It was probably the biggest and best compliment that someone could ever give me.

I have been amazed by all the light that has come from the darkness. I have received tremendous gifts. New friends, new family, insight...freedom. Maybe it was there all along...I don't know. I just know I'm not going to waste any time anymore, and keep my heart and eyes wide open.

Meet Tokyo, my Devon Rex kitten. He's about 5 months old. Loves to ride on my shoulder like a monkey, and he loves to watch me paint. The vet calls those wrinkles on his head, "worry wrinkles", and says he'll probably keep them. When he's not worrying about my latest creation...he's either napping, or playing fetch. Yes, he plays fetch. Better than any dog I've ever known. We're still working on packing up shipments, cleaning brushes, and taking out the trash...he thinks that job is better left to Luke this summer.

This is probably going to be a short post. As many of you know, I had a death in my family. I visited Savannah last weekend to attend my cousin Mike's wedding on Saturday. On Sunday, there were very bad storms and he was killed in a car accident. We were very close. The two of us were both adopted, so we felt a special bond.

He lived with my Grandmother, and I spent every day of summer vacation and holidays with him. I was shocked and devastated...but I cannot imagine how it is for his new bride.

Please keep our family in your thoughts and prayers.

I finished this painting and video before I went to Savannah, and didn't have time to post it. It was inspired by the swing ride at the carnival. I went to Disney World for the 1st time at age 7 with my cousin, Mike. The carnival ride in the video reminds me of that fun time. I hope you enjoy it.

I will be back soon with new work. I'm finding the most comfort in being quiet and painting, I've had a lot of new inspiration, despite the circumstances. And I can't wait to share it with you.

This weekend, I had the opportunity to go visit one of my favorite places, Savannah, GA. I spent every summer there at my Grandmother's house growing up. This trip, I visited the Jepson Center for the Arts. Not only was the art stunning, so was the architecture. Did you know that I majored in photography in art school?

The Jepson Center has 3,500-square foot interactive gallery for children, (but I can tell you from experience...adults like it too). You should definitely plan on visiting there sometime. Hope you had a fantastic weekend too.

pressures, expectations and painting

I don't know about other mom's out there...but at my house, ~~we're~~ I'm having a little bit of a problem adjusting to summer vacation. Kids are home 24/7. My business and studio is from home at least 8+/6. We have camps, trips, and activities planned...but not for every day. So things are a bit bumpy. Kids are bored and allergic to chores. I'm already wondering how I'm going to survive it. As I write this...I've been interrupted 6 7 8 times. I feel guilty that I can't just quit my business for the summer and take it off with them. And then I feel double guilty because I would miss painting too much. To make things worse...I know that when we finally get in a summer groove...school will start back up and we'll have a whole new adjustment time. I've been wondering how other home based creative types manage it? Especially artists...who need their studio time. Danny tells me that I get wacky if I don't have my "creative" time. (I thought I was wacky all the time.) No seriously...I know he's right. It's a part of me...just like my kids....and I couldn't survive without either.

I had a 3 hour shift today at Blue Door. With 9 different artists there, we take turns watching the galleries and studios. It was a nice escape from the house. I was able to work on a smaller painting. This is it in progress with the first coat of resin.

Getting away from the house was good. Just the little bit of painting that I was able to do today...grounded me. It took away my stress and gave me answers to a lot of my ~~problems~~ contrasts. I was really hoping to have the painting finished for you this week, complete with video. But, not sure if that's going to happen or not. What I did realize...is...there is no one standing over my shoulder telling me that I HAVE to have the painting finished this week. I don't have a boss. What a blessing! A friend once told me that I have the greatest boss in the world. Meaning...me. Yet, at the same time it can be a curse. You can end up putting too many pressures and expectations on yourself. I'm guilty of this most of the time.

When I got home today... My email box was still overflowing, I have shipments to get out, three commission paintings to finish, a studio to finish organizing, Etsy listings to put up, Blue Door inventory to complete, the new Mixed Media Resin class to work on, not to mention...my new painting and YouTube video that needs to be finished. But, I did have a semi-neat house courtesy of my two kids, who happened not to kill each other or inflict bodily harm on each other while I was at the gallery.

I took a deep breath...and remembered how blessed I am. Clicked my heels....and told myself...there's no place like home....as long as you remember to create.

It will all get done when it's supposed to get done. No stress...no worries...just more PAINTING.

some growing pains....

I'm afraid that I don't have any wonderful inspiring stories this week, or any new work to show you. I've spent the week doing an extreme makeover on my online websites, and in my studio at home. I'm almost done. It has been exhausting and exhilarating all at the same time.

I know the studio looks really bad at the moment. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel though, believe it or not. We are hanging a huge flourescent fixture...and that's why we have the ladder. Once the ladder is gone, it will be open area to work on large canvas. I'm the kind of girl that would rather paint on the floor in a big wide open space...than on an easel. This isn't my idea of wide open space, but as long as I can stretch my arms out without hitting anything...it's good enough for me. We will also have the webcam permanently installed, so it will be going from time to time when I paint.

So, bear with me as I go through some growing pains in my studio and online. I'm still trying to get everything to work smoothly in the new site and blog.. I've been really surprised by how different everything looks in Firefox vs. Internet Explorer8. On the blog, Internet Explorer causes all my naviagational links to slip. If anyone has any experience with this, and knows how to fix it...let me know. I'll trade art and/or a little bit of $$ for help. LOL No...seriously...I will.

"She Knows" painting...and just a cup of coffee

I just finished a new painting and a video for you. It's a little dark compared to my usual work, but I hope you will like it.

I've been feeling a little melancholy this week. My dear friends who lived next door to us moved to another state. I've mentioned this mom a few times here, because she amazes me with her super mom abilities and shining spirit. When I was looking for a new home for us, I met her. We immediately connected because of art. Before she moved here, she owned her own pottery studio. She had a smile and a positive attitude that could light up a coliseum. Her husband was in the military and gone for months at a time. She had 3 boys, all under the age of 6, and at the time was in the process of adopting a another little boy from China. She was the reason I decided to move to this neighborhood.

With four boys next door, my half tomboy Logan was in heaven. From the start, the kids took to each other like they had known each other forever. They played together on the tire swing, and developed incredible friendships quickly. They fished for minnows in the pond, and walked home together from the school bus. In the meantime...I was busy and the their mom was busy. We'd talk occasionally on the phone when we were trying to round up our kids, we'd send each other messages on Facebook, and when we did see each other in person...we'd talk about that cup of coffee we needed to go get together. But, we never got around to it, things were always too crazy and too busy.

It's a little sad to think about...

But even though we never went out to get that cup of coffee...our bond is so strong. There was always a comfort in knowing that anytime I needed something...she was always there. We watched our kids grow and evolve together. We shared their giggles, tears, screams and even puppy love. We watched them open their circle to other kids in the neighborhood until our backyards became the hoppin' place to be for ages 9 and under.

Children seem almost fearless when it comes to becoming friends with other kids. They share a smile, find something that interests them both...and suddenly the new friendship is launched. As adults, our world is so fast paced. We don't have the time anymore. We have too many obligations, too many commitments. It's become easier to maintain our online friendships that it is to maintain our real life friendships.

So this week...I'm taking a break from everything. I'm calling up my best friend, and insist that we find some time in our schedules to get together...even if it is just for a cup of coffee. I hope you'll do the same too.

This is my latest work in progress. I am hoping to finish it for our 2nd Saturday Art Walk this weekend. I just finished a layer of resin on it. I'll let it cure overnight, and paint more tomorrow. Although you can't tell in the photo...this is a really large piece. It's 36" x 36".

We started production on the new resin classes. I'm very excited about it, hopefully things will be wrapped up by the end of the month, and the class will open in July. I am considering making the classes a la carte. Meaning you could take only the lessons that interest you. Resin is a difficult beast to master, and I feel that some people might only want to learn a little about it...and some people might want to know tons. I would hate for anyone to sign up for a major class, and then find out that resin just isn't for them. Let me know what your thoughts are and what you would prefer.

"Meet me in the Garden"

As most of you know, I'm a big believer in energy flowing. Positive energy is powerful. I am amazed by it's power everyday. It's one of the reasons that I started the Karma giveaway each week. Positive energy is miraculous, healing and inspiring.

But for positive energy to flow and really do it's magic, it relies on our actions, our words and our thoughts. Sounds easy, right? But, it's difficult because our thoughts are constantly playing the roles of "good guy" and "bad guy". How many times have you looked at something you created and thought...."Wow...that's really good." And then two seconds later, you are bombarded with conflicting thoughts of "No, it's not. This is wrong with it and that is wrong with it". It's really easy to get sucked into the bad thoughts. Too many times we end up siding with the "bad guy", and an obstacle blocks the way of the positive energy flowing.

This past weekend, I decided to tackle my studio. There were physical obstacles that were blocking my creative energy. I've known this for some time, but tried to ignore it. Even though my studio was somewhat efficient. It was filled with things. Art supplies, computer, printer, shipping supplies, jewelry supplies...everything except a kitchen sink. Now, most of these things are essential to run my business. But, there were also heavy weights. Why? Because of my thoughts associated with them. Looking at unused art and jewelry supplies sometimes made me feel guilty. The computer reminded me of emails that I needed to answer, and the shipping supplies caused worry about orders that needed packing. The thoughts, whether conscious or unconscious were interrupting the positive flow of energy, effecting me and my ability to really create.

Luckily, I have a wonderful supportive family. They rearranged the house to accommodate me. I was able to remove things from my studio that sucked away my creativity and positive energy. It was a big job, one I'll probably be working on for a few more days. Being human, I whined a little about if on Facebook and Twitter. Robin from Artisan Arts replied, " Feeeeels so goooood to get re-organized...

Expect Fresh Inspiration!!!!"

When I read that, I expected the fresh inspiration to be painting ideas. I knew she was right. Having a less cluttered space felt great! Yet, I didn't expect my previous nagging thoughts to be quickly replaced with more nagging thoughts. I had cleared everything out. The new nagging thoughts had been buried for some time, and now had room to surface again. There had been something that I wanted to do for a long time, and never did it for one reason or another.

The good guy and bad guy had a whole new internal thought conversation. "You know you need to do that Wyanne". You need to try. You'll never know, unless you try. You know you want it." And then the bad guy would respond, "Forget it...it's too much work. You don't have the time. You'll fail. You'll make a fool of yourself". You are not good enough."

Loaded with this new fresh inspiration, I decided to stop the bad guy in his tracks. I took action on the thoughts immediately. It required a lot work and putting everything else for the day on hold. It was a GIGANTIC leap of faith. I can't tell you what I did yet...because I don't want to jinx it, but I will soon.

It felt really good to face that obstacle immediately instead of trying to bury it deep into my mind again....

For the time being...all physical and mental obstacles are out of the way. The good positive energy is flowing and the light is bright. I'm sure new obstacles will come my way. But, I've learned I don't have to put up with them...at least for very long. I'm going to sweep them out, before they've had time to collect dust.

I hope you'll find inspiration in this post to do a little clearing too. What's stopping you? What's in your way? Get rid of the obstacles, both mental and physical. Life's way too short.

I'm a bit behind this week. I have been a little under the weather. I'm better now...but trying to play catch up on everything. Last weekend, I had the opportunity to go on a special art retreat with my 9 year old, Logan. The Mermaids and Mamas retreat was hosted by my dear friend, Kelly Warren. Camping has never been my forte, mainly because I seem to be a bug magnet. And this was no exception, as I learned the hard way that I'm very allergic to horseflies.

The retreat was awesome. An art retreat, filled with fun projects all day long. Working side by side with my little one doing what I love to do! Kelly did an incredible job. A few hours into projects, I noticed that my rambunctious 9 year old would rather be leading the other girls in skits outside than creating art inside. And if she wasn't in the center of an outside activity, she was busily writing letters to fellow campers to leave in their personal mailboxes. Anything, but creating art.

She did manage to make it through a few projects...but it made me wonder if me being a full time artist had turned her off her creative spirit. Maybe she sees me work too hard...maybe it doesn't look fun....maybe she's too overwhelmed with art on a daily basis that she's sick of it. Other daughters were happily creating alongside their moms....why wasn't mine? Why were we so different?

Later on...Logan took the the time to work on a project. Projects were designed for both the mom and the daughter to make the own creations. I decided to sit this one out, and let Logan complete her own. When she was finished...she hated it. I couldn't believe it! I praised her and told her how great it was...but it didn't matter....I couldn't say anything that would make her believe it was good.

And then she turned to me and said, "Mom, why are we so different?" I was a little shocked and asked her what she meant. She said, "Well, we don't look alike, and we don't really like the same things."

It hit me....she was comparing her art to mine. And in her mind, it would never be as good as Mom's. I told her, that we really do look alike. It's just my funky hair that throws it off a bit. And that we were both highly creative.

I got to thinking....how often do we as artists compare ourselves to someone else? We put others on pedestals and think our art could never be as good as theirs. When in all reality...it is good! It might not look the same, or be done with the same techniques...but if it is genuinely done from the heart.....someone, somewhere will always, always think it is great. When will we learn to stop the self criticism? I do it, you do it....we all...at some time or another...compare.

But, different is good...

I decided from that point on to really emphasis how GREAT it was that Logan was so different from me! She is more outgoing, more dramatic and funny! She captivates everyone with her storytelling and acting skills. I compliment her on her imagination and how she uses it verbally, and she now compliments me on how I'm able to paint my imagination.

Yes, we are both different. But, both the same. Creative, passionate, and complex. No longer comparing ourselves to each other... just learning, respecting and appreciating each others individual talents. And we found if you look a little closer...there are a few resemblances.

I realized the other day that I had not shown you this painting. I thought that was a bit unusual because I usually share all new paintings with you. Why not this one? And then I realized it was because it didn't have a video. I intentionally painted it without shooting video. Now, why would I do that? Because I wanted to let go and play....not worry about techniques, the right camera angle, or if it was even going to evolve into a desirable piece of art. Just paint for the pure satisfaction of feeling the paint gliding across the canvas.

Oh...and let me tell you...it was so much FUN!!!

The painting is called, "Shine". It's about letting go and allowing your inner light to shine. To not be a wallflower, a copycat, or a shrinking violet. To trust your inner instincts and just be yourself. By being yourself, you shine because no one shines like you.

We are all different and unique individuals.

A fellow artist asked how I could teach and give away all my techniques, style, and tricks. She couldn't believe I wasn't bothered by other people painting like me. It was hard to explain to her, but it actually helps me to be a better artist. My brother in law owns a multi-million dollar wholesale furnishings company. He develops products, produces them and then sells them to retailers like Sundance, Restoration Hardware and others. Within ~~months~~ ~~weeks~~ days of debuting a new product, other companies are knocking him off. It used to bother him, then he realized it just made him more creative. Instead of worrying about everyone copying him, he concentrates on new brilliant ideas, and continues to blow everyone's mind. In a similar way, I try to do the same thing. I try to pull from inside and do what comes naturally. I've learned over the years that just allowing myself to have fun, play, and not worry....gives me the greatest results. I don't know if I blow anyone's mind with my concepts, but on occasion someone does buy a painting or a giclee....and that is good enough for me.

But, how do we step out of our comfort zone and allow ourselves to shine? Well, first off you need to give yourself permission. Don't question yourself. Listen to your inner voice, and follow it. If you are wondering whether or not to do something....the answer is always YES! Just do it! And even if you end up botching something up...that's okay...you learned. It was a stepping stone to something GREATER!

I know that for a fact.

The last few weeks have been a bit odd. I was able to spend some time with one of my best friends on the island this past Saturday. Candace is an incredible artist, and you may know her as one of the guest artists in my Art Play class. We haven't seen each other in a while, and we both shared that things have been so crazy, that we had not had the opportunity to paint much. We both agreed that it was just the end of the school year and the kid's schedules were overly demanding.

But, what I didn't share with her was the fact that every time I did paint, or make jewelry...everything seemed to get botched up. And I mean, physically and technically botched up...not the kind of botched up where you are not happy with something aesthetically. It's one thing to not be happy with the colors of a painting, or the composition. These are things that you can usually change. I am talking about when something technically goes haywire and you really mess things up to the point that it's sometimes not recoverable.

I've been having way to many of those kinds of things happening lately. And let me tell you...it is a downer. There is nothing that makes you question yourself more, than when you fail at something repeatedly.

I recently shared with you the painting that was ruined because I got the torch to close to the resin.
And then I had jewelry problems with the new jewelry line that I created. I had even sold bracelets and couldn't fulfill the orders because suddenly they kept getting botched up. I couldn't even send the winner of the Karma giveaway #7 her bracelet, because not one would come out right. I felt awful. (I took this photo before the final varnish to cut down on reflections...big mistake.)

But one of the bracelet customers kept telling me, "Good things are worth waiting for and I am OK with it so stop your fretting! ". I wish I could say that I immediately stopped worrying about it...but I had to read it about 10 times a day...to stop stressing over it.

I'm a professional degreed artist....I've trained with a master jeweler from Neiman Marcus for 6 years! What the heck was wrong with me?

And then I got to thinking about it...in my years of college and post graduate work...not once did we work with resin. In the years that I trained with one of the top jewelers in the southeast...we didn't even touch upon the type of jewelry work that I've been tackling.

This was new and uncharted territory. There were no books on the subjects. And there was very limited information via the internet. Why was I being so hard on myself?

So...I started thinking about it differently. I started praising myself for all the knowledge I had gained throughout the years...and praising myself for reaching towards new undiscovered heights in my artistic journey. I praised myself for being brave and diligent.

Road bumps and obstacles are to be expected whenever you tackle something new...no matter what experience or tools you have in your back pocket.

I'm happy to say that the resin and jewelry problems were slowly conquered. And you know what...I learned so much from the experiences. Although frustrating and humiliating....I know now that it was the path that I needed to take...to create something that far exceeded my initial expectations.

The new painting above, "Reflections" was a direct result of this learning process. After a coat of resin, I forgot and left the painting outside overnight. It was a bit of a chilly night, and it caused the resin to have some fogging across her face. I thought I botched it up...and put it aside. Throughout this process, I kept walking past this "messed up" painting and each time I did...I thought it looked more and more beautiful. The fogging looked more like lace, and I started to really appreciate its beauty.

So, I picked up the painting again and continued to work with it. I showered it with good positive thoughts...and quickly disregarded any thoughts that came into my head about how stupid I was to leave it overnight. I think it worked...actually I know it worked and I'm extremely pleased.

So give yourself a break whenever you try something new. Get rid of the inner critic...and praise yourself for trying something new. Love your mistakes and shortcomings....because great things will come out of it...and you know what...

Great things are worth waiting for....

I was inspired to make the giveaway this week about the painting, "Hope Garden". Even though it's an older work that has sold, it just sums up how I've been feeling lately. In fact...I know a lot of people who are feeling the same way. We are all trying to stay positive and happy, even though the world seems to be filled with much bitterness and negativity. It leaves your head spinning.

Mine has been spinning a lot. My schedule has been crazy, and life is throwing it's fair share of challenges my way. I won't bore you with the details. But, in an effort to keep myself from falling down the dark hole, I started journaling. It's a way to keep my thoughts clear, and keep myself moving forward. I decided to do the journal online, because if you put a pen in my hand...I won't write...I'll draw. And who knows...it might also help a few artists who are struggling with juggling it all...just like me. You can read it here...or at the journal link in the right top corner.

Another one of the reasons that I chose "Hope Garden" this week was a permanent exhibit at the University of Florida Shands Hospital, here in Jacksonville. The installation is called "The Healing Gardens". I just got back this evening from the opening. I'm very proud to say that my talented son, Luke was a part of the exhibit.

His, drawing and painting class from the magnet school, Douglas Anderson School of the Arts, donated the artwork to the hospital for their main lobby. It is comprised of 46 individual paintings, all working together as one piece. It is quite impressive, and my iPhone photos cannot capture the magic.

On the way home, I told him how proud I was of him. But, my son felt that his painting was not as strong as the others. He referred to his plants as strange"Avatar" plants, instead of the realistic paintings by the other students. It was very hard for me to explain to him that different is GOOD! Although the entire piece of art as a whole was gorgeous...there were many paintings that blended together. They didn't stand out. His piece stood out as a focal point, and I say that as a trained art professional...and not just a proud mom. The teacher would not have placed it in such a standout spot if it wasn't.

But, this got me thinking. Why do we doubt ourselves as artists? Why do we feel that our artwork has to look like someone else's to be good?

Why do we expect others to believe in our talents first...before we believe that we have talent.

so sad......

The truth is we all have talent. It comes in all shapes and forms. And as artists, we need to believe in ourselves first, because that is the only way others will believe in us.

So, this week...I challenge you to create whatever makes you happy. Not to worry about whether or not someone else will like it...or buy it...or comment on it. Keep telling yourself how good you are...and really, really start believing it.

After some careful consideration, I have decided to leave the giveaway up an extra two weeks until May 5th. I am crazy busy right now. I have both kid's birthdays next week. Logan will be 9 on April 27th and Luke, 16, on May 1st. And to test my stress level a little more...we have the island's biggest festival happening the weekend of May 1st. It's a huge deal where almost 150,000 people descend on our little island. Oh...and Logan wants a kitten for her birthday, so we are also in the middle of cat interviews. Whew... I've had a lot of people who question why I'm having these giveaways. When they learn there is no catch (i.e. you don't have to buy anything, or retweet), they just don't understand why I'm giving things away...especially every week.

It's simply because it stirs up a lot of positive energy.

Then they look at me like I'm nuts. Surprisingly, a lot of those people are artists, also. But, they are artists who complain every day, are afraid to share their techniques with other artists, guarded and wonder why their life is so unhappy....and why their work is stale.

it's very sad....

Many artists worry about their work being copied, or ideas stolen. But, in worrying so much about it...they are stifling their work. Besides, it's all been done before! What would happen if they just let go of the worry? What if we didn't worry about whether a painting or work would sell before we've even painted it? What if we didn't worry about whether or not, someone would like it...and painted only for the pure pleasure of making ourselves happy? What if we shared all our artistic knowledge openly?

wouldn't things be different...

just think of all the positive energy you would be stirring up.... for yourself, for others, for your art....

I try to do this everyday. But, sometimes it's not easy... we are all human. I will tell you one thing I've learned....it's only has hard as you think it is.

So, this is one of the reasons that I started the weekly giveaway. It makes me happy. It makes you happy, and all of that happiness swirls around....

and great things happen.

This is my recent painting, "Sea Garden". It's a huge 36" x 36" wood canvas. It barely fit in my new little cramped studio. I've painted this large before, but never with the new layered resin technique. I was a little scared....

but everyday I wake up to wonderful comments left here. Each one is a gift...even more precious to me than the gift that I give away each week. They lift me up and make me smile. That happiness erases all doubts that I have. And just like Alice in Wonderland...I'm able to find my muchness.

the karma weekly giveaway #8 and a very good mess

This has always been one of my favorites, even before it was published in "Artful Blogging" magazine. It describes me perfectly. A good mess. This week in particular, I've felt like that. I'm juggling family and friends in town, getting ready for a show, and also revamping my studio for a special surprise. I've had no time to paint, make jewelry and have barely been able to keep up with shipments and emails. With no creating time....I've been a mess....

But, you see...great things come from good messes.

Next week, spring break is over. Life returns to normal. Kids go back to school, and relatives go back home. I have time once again. I have time in a newly organized, and revamped studio. I finally have proper lighting, all my metal working tools, all my jewelry supplies, all my paint, my computer all neatly arranged and in perfect order (well...almost). But best of all....I'm able to share it with you now.

You'll be able to visit inside my studio and watch me paint and make jewelry "live". No, I'm not buying everyone roundtrip tickets to the island....it will all be done through a webcam. Isn't that cool? So be sure to check back next week!

the karma weekly giveaway #7 and new work

There are times when you should return to your roots in your art, and times when you should abandon everything and try something new. These past couple of weeks, I've been doing a little of both...I'm happy to say.

"The Fox and the Hedgehog" is my latest painting. I didn't try any of the new resin techniques on it. I had found a cool wood panel with exposed bark on the sides a while back. I put it aside and never got around to painting it. It's gone through two studio moves. I picked it up last week and decided that I needed to paint it like originally planned. The new slick resin techniques just didn't seem to fit it's character, so I used a encaustic beeswax finish instead. I'm really happy with the way it turned out. The beeswax is matte and really gives the wood a nice sheen. Here's a new video of the painting and the inspiration behind it.

Then to really step out of my comfort zone, and try something new. I created a new jewelry line. The jewelry is silver and gold metal with transparent images of my paintings on it. The image is thin, and looks like it is printed on the metal. The colors are transparent. I'm very excited about it.

I also found a new loves with sari silk ribbon and Roman glass. The ribbon is actual recycled silk from Indian Sari's. This is the first time that I've ever incorporated fiber into my jewelry. The sari silk is a little tattered and worn, cut brightly colored and elegant at the same time. The Roman glass is from ancient Rome. The glass has been excavated and has a wonderful patina and luminescent quality to it. In the photo below, the Roman glass is circle just below the wings.

It feels really good to try new things, and especially to discover new materials and techniques. I think, as artists, we need to learn how to balance. Sometimes we get so caught up in learning a new technique because we feel it will take our art to the next level. Or we feel like we need to learn a lot of new techniques to be really good. Or we just need new supplies, more paint, better brushes to create our masterpieces. While all these things are good...we need to make sure we are not using those things as an excuse. We can't fall into the "As Soon As I..." syndrome. As soon as I get new paint...I'll start painting. As soon as I get some new beads, I'll make jewelry. As soon as I learn how to do this....then I can create. You get the idea.

The truth of the matter is...we usually already have everything we need. We put off doing, because we are afraid to fail. We feel safer if we have all the "tools" in our toolbox, and then maybe we can attempt to create. But, really all you need is your heart...it's the best tool to create masterpieces. And best of all...it's not limited to one area of your life.

A couple of weeks ago, my "Little Mermaid" was featured in an Etsy treasury by Terraworks. It is really an honor to be picked for any treasury, but this one was very special...and I want to share it with you.

It's called "Postcards for SaToRi".

At the bottom of the treasury was a comment from Terraworks, asking you to click a link that explained the treasury. It linked to this letter.

Hello!

For those of you who don't know me, my name is Melissa Lewis, Haut Totes on Etsy, as well as Hauttotes on twitter.

My 10 year old daughter Satori has Spinal Muscular Atrophy (type II) She uses a power wheelchair, can't walk, crawl, etc. Despite that she's a rock star!! She has a super sense of humor, gets straight A's even though she misses an average of 40 days of school a year! She's a great sister & daughter & a fantastic person all around.

Because she is so physically weak her body doesn't hold its self up well and she has developed severe scoliosis. The curve of her spine it is now starting to crush her lung, so on March 31 she will have full spinal fusion. They will open her back from the neck all the way down, insert 2 titanium rods, one on either side of her spine, wire the whole thing up and place donor bone in between all the vertebrae. Eventually it will all grow together "fusing" her spine into one long bone.

We are traveling to California to have this done, with an estimated stay in the hospital of 7-10 days. I am hoping to get people to send her postcards from all over. I think that the messages (and pictures) will be fun for her. I also plan to take an atlas and have her mark off states and countries (sneaking in a little geography).

We have great insurance, a FANTASTIC surgeon and a world renowned hospital!!

So, are you having fun with these giveaways yet? Thank you to all that have entered and sent your inspiring comments. You guys are the best. I can't thank you enough. Last night, we had the first International winner. Sanda from Ireland! Isn't that cool...with St. Patrick's Day?

Anyway...I've been having a lot of fun lately. It's great when your job is your passion. And you go to work everyday excited and motivated. Usually, I spring out of bed in the early morning because I can't wait to start or finish a painting. But, lately...I've been dragging. Part of it can be blamed on the daylight savings time change here in the US. But, the other can only be blamed on trying to do too much.

I had a show at Blue Door this past weekend. It was last minute to fill in for another artist. I spent most of last week as a hermit working to get ready for that show. The hard work paid off. I had a great show and it was fantastic to see everyone's overwhelming positive response to the new resin pieces. But, instead of resting afterward, I kept working.

It's really difficult when you are your own boss, and especially when your work is something you love. You have to remind yourself...that sometimes just getting a good night's sleep isn't enough rest. You have to nurture yourself. In the past when I would think about taking time off...the one thing I want to do is paint. Isn't that crazy? I've gone on vacations, and taken my painting supplies. I had to learn the hard way, that not taking time off can be detrimental to your well being.

So, this time...I'm catching the problem early. Tomorrow, I'm taking the whole day off. I am going to Jacksonville to see an exhibit of contemporary Chinese artists at the J Johnson gallery. And then to my son's art show at Douglas Anderson School of the Arts. I will not paint tomorrow...even though it will be so tempting to stay up late.

But, in the meantime while I take a little break...there's a new giveaway for you this week.

What a week this has been! I've been showered with love from everyone here on the Internet and at home. I celebrated a birthday this past weekend, and it has been the best ever. I love it when your birthday falls on a weekend, and it becomes your entire birth-weekend.

Tim Burton and Disney jump started my birthday with the release of "Alice and Wonderland". Thank you!!! We went off the island to see it...or as we say on the island, "overseas". My son's girlfriend, Kelly joined us. To my surprise, she gave me my first birthday present.

Not only is she beautiful, she is so thoughtful! I'm going to keep it on my nightstand and fall down the rabbit hole every night before I go to sleep. And for those of you, who haven't seen the new movie....omg...it is incredible. Probably my all time favorite movie.

Saturday, I woke up to a showering of gifts from my family. I received chocolate truffles, a digital portfolio viewer (that allows me to take photos of my art with me in my purse), The 4 Hour Work Week book (lol), the most scrumptious chocolate cake and this great Porcupine ring!

And...my daughter's best friend, 9 year old Reegan, surprised me with flowers,a jellyfish paperweight, chocolate and a handmade card. She bought most of it with her allowance.

She is a very special girl...who I'm convinced is going to grow up to be an artist.

Then if that wasn't enough...Danny whisked me away to St. Augustine to stay at the stunningly gorgeous Casa Monica Hotel.

That evening, per my request we dined at my favorite restaurant...The Tasting Room. I wanted to go there, not just for the food, but because I knew Meraux Dantes was going to be there. Meraux is the mentalist/magician that I've told you about. He performs tableside on Wednesday and Friday nights at The Tasting Room. Meraux has been somewhat of a muse for me lately. He sent the great email that broke the artist block that I was experiencing a few weeks ago. After that email, I painted "Peacock Garden". I wanted to surprise him with a giclee of the painting.

He was very touched by the gesture, and we talked for awhile. We took this picture and said goodbye. Then he turned around to the table, and said to me, "Is there someone that you've been thinking about, someone that you love, dead or alive?" This caught me totally off guard, and half a dozen names ran through my head. Then I focused on one, my dad. He asked me who the person was, and their name. He smiled, and said he was in a staff meeting earlier, and some letters came into his mind, so he wrote them down. Then he had me pull out a piece of paper from his wallet, and guess what....

it was my Dad's initials.

I love Meraux! I don't know what it is...but his magic totally inspires my art.

It's hard to believe that earlier in the week, I was stressed out, and dreading the upcoming birthday. I had too much to do...and not enough time to do it. I have a last minute show, and I couldn't possibly take time off to celebrate. But, by the time Friday rolled around...there was no stopping it. I had to just go with the flow... and look what happened...

Creating art is much the same process. You can stress and worry over your work,. and it all shows in the end result. But, if you can manage to let go, play, and have fun with your art....the end result will be pure magic.

This is week 3 of the Karma weekly giveaway. I hope you are not tired of them yet...because I'm not. The positive energy that the weekly giveaway stirs up is incredible. It's better than Girl Scout Thin Mints...and that says a lot! LOL

This is the new painting that was a direct result of all your positive thoughts flowing my way. Your comments from week one and two of the contest, motivated me to stretch my wings further, and push myself past self imposing limits. I surprised myself, and learned a lot.

"Peacock Garden" is full of layers. Upon the multiple painted layers, there are two coats of resin, with another painted layer in between. Unfortunately, even a great scan of the painting cannot show all these details....but I assure you it's way cool in person.
Painting all the layers reminded me of manifesting a dream. When I set out to start a new painting, I have a general idea of what I want it to look like. In this case, it started out with a basic drawing of the girl and the peacock, no flowers or garden yet. I know that I want the painting to be of a girl and a peacock...nothing else. That is my goal. I have no idea how I'm going to get there, except to start painting. Each layer, each brushstroke, each technique is a baby step in getting to the finished goal. As I paint, things change, unexpected things happen...but I don't let that get in my way. I keep painting, and let it evolve on it's own. And most importantly, I don't stress or get frustrated during the process. I play, have fun, and am thankful for creating.

So, you see...even something as simple as creating a painting...can show you how simple it is to manifest a dream. You decide what the end result will be, you take baby action steps, keep a positive attitude, show gratitude and let the Universe do the rest.

This is why I am having the Weekly Giveaway. It's part of my goal. The Weekly Giveaway is only one of the baby steps that I'm taking to reach the goal of showing in a major gallery (or two) and/or Art Basel. It's a way of showing my gratitude for all the love you have shown me, through the years. It generates lots of positive thoughts. Those positive thoughts have a ripple effect, and are contagious. And that's a really good thing for everyone.

So thank you to all who have participated and left me such wonderful, positive, nurturing comments. I feel tremendous love. Thank you.

"Boo Boo Bear"

Recently, I received an email from a very nice lady who had purchased art from me. She said her parents had discouraged her from creating art at a young age. And now, at 52 she wanted to start painting...where should she begin? She didn't want to go to art school, and couldn't even find the nerve to start with a box of crayons and paper.

I actually get this question a lot, and always have a hard time answering it. I know some people need structure...they need someone to tell them how to paint. They need a step by step lesson plan. I think there is a lot of value in learning that way...if you can later break away and find your own voice/style in your painting. I told her to check with her local art supply store or Michael's for classes. I also gave her some online resources, such as SmartFlix...where you can rent art and craft videos like Netflix, and Artist Network TV where you can watch lots of art videos online.

But, the truth was...I really wanted to tell her to just "Play". Forget about the structure of a class, just remember how it was in Kindergarten when you just painted because it was fun! There shouldn't be any rules...except to have FUN! How wonderful it would be...if we could all do that!

I guess you are wondering why I didn't recommend my classes. Well, she didn't tell ask specifically to paint girls...and I was afraid that a total beginner might get lost in my Art Play class. Although it encourages you to play, it's just a whirlwind of mixed media techniques and fun, and no finished paintings. Maybe some would disagree with this, but I didn't want it to discourage her. Sometimes you do need that structured class. Over the summer, I took a private workshop with a famous encaustic (wax) painter. I had worked with encaustics before, but I still needed the validation that you get from taking a structured class. It was a great experience and I learned a lot.

I guess my point is, that you have to find what works for you. Some people need a structured start to finish class, while others need to just find their own way with the materials. There is no right or wrong....it's up to the individual.

I hope that whatever she decides to do...that she will take the time to "Play". Even as a seasoned artist, we still need to take the pressure off ourselves to make a "masterpiece" piece of art, and just take the time to play around with our materials. As a beginner, play is an important part of learning. And besides....it's just plain FUN!

After answering her email, I decided to take the rest of the day to play. I created "Boo Boo Bear" shown above. He's done entirely in Encaustic wax. He's quite simple, imperfect and yet, enchanting. He's a total detour from my normal work...but I had so much fun creating him! I would have never known...if I hadn't of taken the daily artistic pressures off myself....and just played.
